[poetry]therapy by Heather Rose
praise for [poetry]therapy :
“[poetry]therapy by Heather Rose is a companion for anyone navigating grief, growth, or the quiet exhaustion of being human. Rose’s poetry splits the reader open in the best way possible. After all, ‘why talk small when hearts are big, and pulsing?’”
– Alicia Cook
bestselling author of Sorry I Haven’t Texted You Back
Poetry can be medicine. In [poetry]therapy, Heather Rose opens the door to healing with words that feel both raw and restorative. Divided into “assessment, intervention, and evaluation,” the poems move through anxiety, grief, resilience, and grace with honesty and heart. This collection isn’t about easy answers, it’s about finding language for what hurts, and space for what heals. Rose shows us that poetry itself can be therapy, reminding us we’re never alone in the work of becoming whole.
— Marcus Amaker
Charleston, SC’s first Poet Laureate
South Carolina Literary Hall of Fame inductee
Heather Rose is a social worker with a passion for the power of the written word.
Holding a bachelor’s degree in honors psychology and a master’s in social work from the University of Michigan, she has served the community as a licensed clinical social worker and writer for over a decade. As a licensed clinical social worker, Heather has organically turned to biblio-poetry therapy in clinical practice, in conjunction with other evidence-based interventions including CBT, ACT, play therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. Heather has served as a child and family therapist both in-person and virtually, inviting the use of thoughtfully selected picture books, poems, and journaling prompts to address a wide range of presenting concerns, from social anxiety to parenting challenges, depression, identity exploration, and more.
In addition to her clinical work, she also contributes written content to the National Association of Social Worker’s Social Work Advocates Magazine and Social Work Blog, as well as Social Work Today, the Lupus Foundation of America, the Child Mind Institute, and many others. She has also contributed to the University of Michigan School of Social Work’s Ongoing Magazine, and is committed to writing through
the lens of her social work values. As a writer, her motto is, “Write for good: Making a difference, one word at a time.” Her work rests on the belief that social workers can make a difference through the written word, that thoughtful books, articles, and op-eds can be powerful advocacy tools in raising awareness about important issues and inspiring change.
Heather Rose is the editor and curator of a collection of poems published by Mental Health America of South Carolina entitled Inside & Out, contributed by community members whose lives have been impacted by mental health concerns. She also served as an editor for Coastal Carolina University’s Communal Pen Anthology, published by The Athenaeum Press.
Whether she’s writing a poem, an article, or a book, every word counts.
