By a Different Ocean centers around the Cape Cod that the author knows and loves so well. Timeless and timely, the poetry rolls over your ears like the tides, soothing and rhythmic, yet edgy and often tart, poem after poem. One can almost hear the gulls in the sky; it’s that vivid.

Originally from Upstate New York, Katy Whittingham graduated from Emerson College in Boston with her MFA in writing. She currently teaches writing at both Bridgewater State College and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and resides on Cape Cod with her husband Michael. By a Different Ocean is her first book.

Her work has been published in Tonopah, Third Wednesday, Perigee, Kennesaw Review, Hoboeye, Frigg Magazine, Ludlow Press, Southern Ocean Review, The Circle, The Pedestal Magazine, and Beacon St. Review (now Redivider).

Intention

Intention is the final berry fallen from the bush
rolling under the low burning August sun.
Juices like desire rising to the thinnest surface,
purple fuzzy skin becoming richly blushed,
guarded in the moment by divided blades of grass.

It is the last mad delight of the fleeting season,
through sweetness holds no praise that can halt time,
and brief perfection mixes and turns within its core.
Oozing juice finally gives way and filters down.
The contribution feeds an autumn weed.
