  Like Saul, is full of empathy - for animals, for constellations, for people, for children. Her meditations are damp and rich. Well written and insightful, the poems in this collection are soulful and sad yet written with a deep understanding of the way things do not have to be.


Francine Tolf's poetry and essays have appeared in numerous journals including Margie, Nimrod, Under the Sun, and Southern Humanities Review. She has been awarded grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Loft Literary Center, the Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Foundation, and Blacklock Nature Sanctuary. A Good Thing

You can stick him in a highchair under hot lights
until he grins for the camera.
Or put him in a boxing ring and make him throw punches.
You can even strap him inside a rocket
and blast it towards space.
__________________ He’ll forgive you.
You can test cleaning products on her skin,
or inject her with any number of diseases.
You can break her vertebrae, glue it together.
She’ll forgive you.
__________________ She’ll be grateful
if you visit the cell where she’s been dumped.
If her brain is shrieking, you won’t hear it.
And that’s a good thing, friend; a good thing
neither of us can hear the long red animal scream
wrapping itself around our planet.
