Most of my work in this collection, and in general, is concerned with the relationship between author and reader forged in the sharing of words/ideas in an absence. It seems that often readers (of poetry especially) expect some sort of hidden exchange of meaning between author and themselves, perhaps through metaphor, symbolism, etc. That the words on the page are more than what they say, and are not really saying what they appear to be on the surface. In the poems such as "Lethe" I have tried to illustrate that what lies beneath the surface of words is the same as above, that there is no hidden meaning, no communiques to receive. Of course I as author had some intent when setting them down, but my absence renders that intent unimportant; what makes those words "mean" something is what the reader invests into the words/poem. What is important is what they see beneath the words. By presenting the poems as art on display I hoped to objectify words, calling attention to the fact that they are things, left behind for others to encounter, and not just the shadows of thought. The three collages of a cut up thesaurus portrays words as things, classified and categorized. In these pieces, the reader's consciousness, perceiving, makes meaning from the words, much the way the physical world is encountered on a daily basis. -Richard Erdmann on his methods and the writing of "Without" Richard Erdmann lives with his family in the seacoast area of New Hampshire. His work has also appeared in Thought, Score, prechelonian and Poetry Motel. This is his first published collection of poetry; and the first book by Plan B Press' Stay At Home Press division.
